Support for Families with Critically Ill Infants and Babies
Support for Families with Critically Ill Infants and Babies
Annisa is an Indonesian girl with big, beautiful eyes. As a 3 years old, she came to live in Taiwan with her parents. She followed them to the field of tea trees where they worked every day. Although they were not well-off, they lived happily. One day, while running playfully towards her parents, she fell down for no reason. They thought that she had tripped and fell because she was running too fast, but when she was taken to a physician, she was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Her mom and dad's world collapsed in an instant.
Brain tumors, hydrocephalus, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, aphasia, paralysis ......, these were even more difficult terms for Annisa's parents to understand than the foreign language. Their Mandarin ability was not good; it was even harder for them to cope with these medical terms, not to mention the heavy financial burden came with the medical care. Her mother quit her job to take care of Annisa, and she was with her 24 hours a day, while her father took several odd jobs to earn more money the best he could. However, all her parent's salary and all their savings were used to pay for the medical expenses, leaving little for living expenses. The rising medical costs were too much for most local family to handle, let alone a migrant family in Taiwan.
The stress of medical expenses and care, as well as the reoccurring condition, left Annisa's parents exhausted. Therefore, the hospital seeks help from Christian Salvation Service inquiring about the possibility of subsidizing her medical expenses. Considering the family's meager income, the fact that the child was a patient with critical condition who needs intensive care and that they have no family resources in Taiwan, nor other social welfare resources, Christian Salvation Service provided financial support to help Annisa receive the care she needed.
Fortunately, the tumor was successfully removed and her condition has stabilized gradually with the supports provided. In addition to the care of the medical professionals, Annisa’s mother has done her utmost to help her daughter’s treatment and care for her during this difficult time. Annisa has progressed from not being able to speak at all to being able to call her mother. This is a good start for her continued post-healing care back in Indonesia. It is encouraging for us at CSS to know that our work contributes to providing some relief to families and children in need. We hope that someday in the future we will hear from the family informing us that Annisa is cheerful and lively again.
When parents are faced with a serious illness, cancer, premature birth, or a rare disease in their child, they try to do everything they can to save their child. However, the stress of caregiving, traveling to and from medical facilities, and the huge cost of medical care can be too much for families to bear. Often, the more effective but more expensive medical treatments can’t be the option for the family. Christian Salvation Service’s mission is to support and assist the weak and needy. For those families in need living in Taipei City and New Taipei City area we are here to help. Christian Salvation Service provides a subsidy of up to NT$30,000 per year for each child under 6 who is diagnosed as having a serious illness, cancer, premature birth, or rare disease, and who meets the requirements of a vulnerable family. It is our hope that the subsidy will help to alleviate the financial burden on families in these challenging situations and that the children can receive appropriate medical care. Families needing this support can contact us directly or seek for hospital social services’ referral.
